Around 1820, Cookie Figowitz, a veteran chef, befriends King-Lu, a Chinese immigrant. The two men start a small donut business that quickly expands. Their “secret” recipe is based on a single ingredient: milk, which they take every night from the first cow brought to the United States, which belonged to a wealthy local notary.
