Dark Sisters
Annemarie von Matt – Sonja Sekula
Annemarie von Matt (1905-1967) and Sonja Sekula (1918-1963) both came from the heart of Switzerland. As of the 1940s Sekula was active in New York, initially among the exiled Surrealists and then as part of the circle of American avant-garde artists. Von Matt lived in Stans after her marriage to the sculptor Hans von Matt. Although there are many affinities in the lives and works of the two artists, they have never been presented together in an exhibition. Both of them wrote when they were young women, but were known in the public domain as artists. The exhibition focuses on this dual talent which is manifest in literary works and pictorial works that include text. The quests of the two women, who strove for liberation from rigid role asciptions in matters related to society and to love, are reflected in the writing and in the fragmentary expressive modes they chose.
