Nicole Eisenman and the Moderns
Aspects of both pop culture and subculture, as well as stylistic and compositional elements from the Renaissance to modern art shape the figurative art of Nicole Eisenman (b. 1965 in Verdun / F, lives in New York / USA).
In different media, Eisenman addresses the search for a sense of identity beyond binary gender roles and conventions. The role of the human being in an anonymous society, as well as in response to social conflicts and constricting power arrangements is a leitmotif in Eisenman’s oeuvre that already preoccupied artists in the early 20th century. In the exhibition over 70 paintings and works on paper from all periods of Eisenman’s career enter into a dialogue with modern art from the collections of the Aargauer Kunsthaus and its partner institutions.
The exhibition is organized in close cooperation with Nicole Eisenman, and in collaboration with the Kunsthalle Bielefeld, the Fondation Vincent van Gogh Arles and the Kunstmuseum Den Haag.
