Sophie Taeuber-Arp in Unknown Photographs
Sammlung im Fokus
In 2016, a portfolio of 98 photographs of Sophie Taeuber-Arp (1889 – 1943) was bought for the collection of the Aargauer Kunsthaus. From her childhood in Trogen (AR) to her years in Zurich, the photographs taken between 1891 and 1942 document both the artist’s life and her tireless examination of the creative possibilities of applied art.
Taeuber-Arp’s time in Trogen yielded photographs taken by her mother, showing the artist in many outfits of her own design. Inspired by the costumes of the indigenous population of North America and oriental textile art, the artist continued to playfully and experimentally pursue her fascination with costuming – even after her studies at the famous Debschitz School in Munich.
Hence, the presentation of selected photographs not only grants us intimate insights into the biographical development of Taeuber-Arp, but also reveals the versatile and interdisciplinary progressiveness of her artistic practice.
