Symmetry
Fooling with the Rules

The exhibition comprises works from the collection of the Aargauer Kunsthaus. Spanning the period from the eary 20th century to the present day, all of the pieces shown take as their subject symmetry, understood as nature’s blueprint, as a comprehensive formal principle, and as a law of ornamentation. Symmetry runs the gamut from cosmic law to canonical design precept in the work of numerous artists.

Indeed, artists seem fairly bound to address the issue of symmetry, albeit, on occasion, with irony and from a critical distance. The exhibition includes works by Hans Arp, Johannes Gachnang, Josef Herzog, Emma Kunz, Max Matter, Robert Müller, Guido Nussbaum, Vaclav Pozarek, Dieter Roth, Jean-Frédéric Schnyder, Roman Signer, Matias Spescha, Hugo Suter, André Thomkins, Hannah Villiger and Adolf Wölfli.
