A look back
at the 1970s

Together apart

In video interviews, artists and other figures from the art world share their memories of the 1970s in Aarau. Contemporary regional artists also reflect on their perspectives of this period – what do they associate with the 1970s? The interviews were conducted in the preparation of the exhibition Together apart. There are even more fascinating conversations to be seen in the Freiraum at the Aargauer Kunsthaus!

Marie-Claire Baldenweg + Markus Müller

Markus Müller (*1943) is one of the founding members of the Ateliergemeinschaft Ziegelrain. In the video, he talks about buying the «old shack» and about life with his fellow artists.
Marie-Claire Baldenweg (*1954) recounts how, as a young woman, she perceived the art scene in the small town of Aarau – and what role the Aargauer Kunsthaus played in this.pielt hat.

Lea Schaffner, Timo Ullmann + Sabina Schwaar

Lea Schaffner (*1989) talks about how her studies took her away from Aargau, yet her network keeps bringing her back.
Timo Ullmann (*1987) has his studio close to the former Ateliergemeinschaft Ziegelrain. What else connects him to the art of the 1970s?
Sabina Schwaar (*1967) is herself a child of the 1970s. Today she works in a cooperative of studios – how did that come about?

Annelise Zwez + Beat Wismer

Beat Wismer (*1953), art historian and former director of the Aargauer Kunsthaus, recounts how the various art movements of the 1970s had a lasting influence on him.
In the 1970s, art critic Annelise Zwez (*1947) got to know the artists of the Ateliergemeinschaft Ziegelrain. How did she perceive the spirit of the times in Aargau back then?
