An inspiring encounter with a work of art serves as the basis for a composition. This idea is taken up by the new cooperation project between the Aargauer Kunsthaus and the argovia philharmonic. Starting with the viewing of a selected work from the collection, the audience is taken on a one-hour journey through time, combining art-historical and musical perspectives and leading through different eras of the arts.

Robert Zünd’s painting Am Sempachersee (Lebensfreude) depicts nature as a place of tranquillity, light and quiet joy. In the shade of mighty trees, children play by the water’s edge, whilst the view stretches across the lake to the mountains. The landscape is far more than a lifelike depiction – it conveys an atmosphere of harmony and inner peace. The music of the 19th century also evokes a similar effect. In Rossini’s Quartetto No. 3, we encounter lightness, movement and a cheerful, almost pastoral musical language that is reminiscent of a sunny stroll through a summer landscape. Mendelssohn’s String Quartet Op. 12, by contrast, opens up a deeper romantic dimension: light and shadow, tranquillity and tension alternate, lending nature an emotional depth.
