Today they are regarded as emblematic works of European landscape painting. Caspar Wolf (1735-1783), born in the Aargau town of Muri, painted his works at the time on commission from the Berne-based publisher Abraham Wagner. He completed approximately 200 oil paintings, which were intended to serve as models for copperplate engravings that Wagner planned to publish alongside texts by naturalists. The first edition, with the title «Merkwürdige Prospekte aus den Schweizer Gebürgen» [Noteworthy Views of the Swiss Mountains] appeared in 1777 and presented a completely new image of the Alps. The exhibition showcases this pioneering project through Wolf’s originals from the Aargauer Kunsthaus’ own collection and prints from various series of engravings.
