Together apart

There is a spirit of optimism in the air: a willingness to experiment, new forms of collaboration and artistic diversity characterise the Swiss art scene of the 1970s. In this electrifying atmosphere, different styles unfold side by side on an equal footing. The exhibition traces this zeitgeist and offers an associative view of it.

Aarau also became a focal point of the art scene: artists working in the Ziegelrain studio community found their inspiration far beyond the region in international trends such as Nouveau Réalisme, Pop Art and conceptual approaches. Together apart highlights specific manifestations of these trends at the local and national level.
